The blog will look at the cards, the people mentioned, variations in the set and sports that are not commonplace. Track stars will probably be a primary focus. Does anyone have a good idea? I saw one stack of basketball cards and that was it. Their prices were out of my range so I moved on. Has anyone been finding Sportscaster cards anywhere?
RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-61035364794617819432022-01-26T19:10:00.002-06:002022-01-26T19:10:44.374-06:00My First COMC Order, A New Project and Another Coaching Season Begins
I found some track and field cards that I wanted on COMC.com. I didn't check prices guides or anything like that since I only buy affordable cards. I've been involved in running since the 1970s but I don't know much about the card sets, prices, availability, etc. I've mostly focused on baseball cards, Sportscaster cards, Kellogg's cards and Starting Lineup figures and cards.

Here is what I picked up. I will assume they are from the set that was mentioned on COMC.com since I have no other knowledge and no reason to doubt them.

A few cards depicting persons from the movie Chariots of Fire, which focused on the 1924 Olympics. I saw the movie soon after it was released on one of the coldest days in Chicago history. Why is that memorable? As a student, we walked to the train and spent far too long waiting for it.

That was a first date that didn't lead to many more. She wanted to go see a religious movie and I wanted to see a running movie. She's probably a millionaire banker and I am the one teaching at a Catholic school.

This Lord Burghley card is from the 1926 Lambert & Butler Who's Who in Sport. He didn't approve the use of his name in the movie so there is a character in the movie called Lord Lindsay who has many similarities to Burghley.

This Charles Paddock card is from the 1932 Bulgaria Sports Photos set. I have all of the 72 cards in this series between three different printings - blank, "A", "B". I have a few (7) from printing "C". So, I suspect that there will be a few variations of statistics at least. Since COVID I've been busier than ever and I am not in a health profession.

I picked up hardly anything new this year. I think I added a few of the baseball stadiums.

I am continuing a look at the variations that I have for each deck / series / pack. Here I will take a look at series 20. I've got all 24 cards from the first printing, the "A" printing and the "B" printing as well as a few cards from the "C" printing. If there are some variations I should find them.

I hope to keep moving along through these decks. I need to get more than one done every six months somehow.

I don't know how I will ever get this set done at my current pace.

___________________________________________________________________________________

20-02 Beyond Sports - The Astrodome. I plan to be back as we get closer to the National. I rarely see Sportscaster cards there, but I can always hope to find something.
RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-79919597308904983422021-02-27T21:07:00.001-06:002021-02-27T21:07:09.004-06:00Trying to Get a Few More Decks Done
Nothing is going on here. Not really any shows and there isn't much to find on ebay lately. I would like to finish my decks up to 60 so here is the short list of what I need. Do you have any of these?

59-20 Frank Robinson

59-14 Yankee Stadium

58-20 Veterans Stadium

57-02 Dave Winfield

57-01 Willie Lanier

56-18 Longest Passes

56-11 Marvin Webster

I am certainly interested in finding any cards on my want list, see the right side of the blog, but these ones would be great additions since they are the last seven that I need to be done with sets 1 through 59.

In the meantime, I am hoping that the world becomes safer for everyone again soon and that the National happens this year since it is near my house.
RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-2183403120324170352020-12-28T13:04:00.001-06:002020-12-28T13:04:37.914-06:00Under 100 to GoFor the first time, I decided to check how many Sportscaster cards I don't have. I am ignoring the print run / variations. Since I have everything entering into Excel, I figured out that I am down to needing 99 different cards. I've listed more of them on the right side of the blog. Let me know if you have any to trade.

That is great, but some things haven't changed. I still need Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Wayne Gretzky. Lots of the high numbers that I need are the more popular (and probably expensive) cards in each deck/series.

Since I have the checklist in Excel, send me an e-mail if you'd like a copy of it. I haven't completed looking into variations, but this is at least a starting point.

I really like checklists that list team and sports, but it might be difficult to do with the Sportscaster set. Maybe someday.

I haven't started on any foreign checklists. Does anyone have any of these?
RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-50135923919680282952020-12-26T16:50:00.007-06:002020-12-26T21:51:00.946-06:00I am Sorting the Purchase from April 20th - Finally
I will update my want list if I am lucky enough to get anyone I need from this lot. Ugh. Nothing that I need. Maybe I will get a few different variations that I don't have.

UPDATE #1 - I sorted the first 19 decks and I ended up with 155 new variations. If I would have known this I would have sorted these a bit earlier. How did I get so many? From decks 11 - 19 I had very few of the 'B' print run. It turns out that this lot was almost all from the 'B' print run.

UPDATE #2 - Just over eight months and I finally sorted the box of cards that I purchased in April. For decks 20 - 55 I ended up getting about 100 more variations that I needed, mostly from print run 'C'. Overall, it was a nice surprise to get some many variations.

I only need a few cards from the first 59 decks - not including variations. Here is the list.

Those are my goals for next year. No one probably wants to encourage me to do more with the hobby. Then when a few popped up the other day I decided to contact the seller instead of justing using the Buy It Now option. Why? I was tired and I didn't do the math on how cheap the cards were.

Naturally, I was too late since someone else who wasn't tired bought both lots quickly. Another lesson learned.
RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-13850669842739817552020-12-06T21:30:00.002-06:002023-06-21T19:50:26.882-05:00Track and Field Fans - Check Out This Video About Kellogg's Olympic Champions Cards
https://youtu.be/BHILLAQRGKY

I really like these cards and there is as great commercial from the UK.

I have been busy during the school year so I didn't get to post much. Anything odd or interesting?

RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-54308135519261334922020-04-20T18:43:00.001-05:002020-04-20T18:43:14.187-05:00I Finally Got Some New Sportscaster CardsThere are usually a lot of shows in the Chicago area and flea markets would have opened by now in a normal year. So, I haven't been able to pick up anything lately. I took a chance on a Sportscaster lot on ebay. It was listed at 500+ cards without stars. It looked like a lot more than 500 and I could see there were many track and field cards so I took a chance.

Surprisingly there was a Steve Prefontaine card and lots of other track stars. There was not an NCAA Cross Country card with Prefontaine on the front.

The biggest stars were not there and I doubt that there are any high numbers. It will be good to have a new pile of cards to sort and check for variations.

I was happily surprised that there were some boxing, football, hockey, basketball and baseball stars. Unfortunately, many of the baseball cards were taped onto something and there is some paper loss as a result on some of them, notably Nolan Ryan, Ted Williams and George Brett.

All in all a good lot. I won't count them but there has to be a lot more than 500. If the stay-at-home order goes for all of May I will probably find time to go through them.RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-12844934724993985242020-03-19T10:14:00.004-05:002020-03-19T10:14:49.073-05:00Sportscaster Series #19 Variations That I FoundI have all of the blank and "A" print run cards from deck 19. I work in spurts due to my schedule of teaching, coaching and working summers on a golf course. All of that is up in the air now so I will try to post a few things.

One collector who reached out, Rich, sent copies of the official correspondences he's gotten from the Sportscaster Corporation along with the original packaging. One of the letters clearly mentions the leaflets that were included with every three sets.

Enjoy reading the letters.
I definitely remember them advertising safari cards. No way I'd buy them. I spent my cash on baseball cards, Wacky Packages, ice cream and candy.
I have all of the blank and A print runs from series 18. I have only a few of the B print run cards. The first two print runs only have one variation - 18-17. It is shown below. The A print run contains the 1978 results. Nothing much to report on this one.

I have all of the blank/Italy print run and I have most of the "A" print run. I only have two cards from print run "B" so there are probably more variations. I'm working on getting all three versions for Series #17.

Here are the back variations I've seen. I have yet to check for variations on the front of the cards.

It would be great to be able to easily collect cards from the cereal boxes. They have a different look with the printing on cereal box stock. To me that makes me want to collect them.

What's the problem? Check out the 1980 box at the top of the picture. There are six cards together. The bottom three could easily be cut out and displayed as cards since all of the cards are visible. The top three cards don't offer that same possibility since these cards were overlapped in the image created.

Kellogg's used a few different formats to do these cards. Some of them involved the overlapping. If I have a box without overlaps I'd be tempted to cut it into individual cards, especially if the box isn't complete or if it isn't in great condition. I guess if would also depend if I got a duplicate of the box or back panel.

Some years also contain card images on the front and/or sides of the box. The 1980 box above has a small image on the side.

I haven't created a list of what different boxes were produced each year. I will start that and then hope to get help from others with it. I also want to know what products offered cards - Frosted Flakes, Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran, etc. RunForeKelloggshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442142372121924145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1580362487596801887.post-12541034591416305022019-12-30T22:08:00.002-06:002019-12-30T22:08:29.328-06:00More About Triptychs

I was told that the Triptych's began with Series 5. They were then issued during every third set so the next ones were series 8, then 11, etc. That makes sense based on the large number of these that I have acquired. The highest numbers I have are 77 and 101.
